Thanksgiving Day

DID YOU KNOW’S?

  • Sarah Josepha Hale is best known for writing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” but she is also responsible for convincing Abe Lincoln (in 1863) to make Thanksgiving Day a National Holiday.

  • Turkey wasn’t always the main dish of Thanksgiving dinner. In fact, turkey didn’t arrive to the center of the table until the 19th century. The Wampanoag Indians, native to the area where the Pilgrims landed, were much more likely to bring clams, eels, lobsters and venison.

  • Cranberry sauce was invented 50 years AFTER the first Thanksgiving Feast. The same time sweet potatoes began arriving in America.

  • In 1953, a worker at Swanson ordered way (WAY) too many turkeys. Then, Jerry Thomas had the idea to create a packaged dinner on an aluminum trays. So, women on assembly lines scooped turkey, dressing, peas and sweet potatoes – giving birth to the first TV dinner!

  • In 1939, in an effort to boost retail sales during the Great Depression, Franklin D. Rooselvelt decided to move up the holiday by one week. The idea was so poorly received, in 1941, Thanksgiving was moved back to the 4th Thursday of November.
